University of Greenwich at Medway Reveals the Secret Life of Powders

A1483-Mike-Bradley-LectureSugar, soap and the problems of exploding custard powder will be among the subjects of a free talk to be held at the University of Greenwich at Medway.

 

“A Life in Powder: A Non-Technical Look at How Powder Flow Affects Our Lives” will be the title of an inaugural lecture to be given by Professor Mike Bradley at the Pilkington Building on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 6.15pm.

 

Professor Bradley is based at the world-renowned Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, which is a department within the University of Greenwich at Medway’s School of Engineering.

 

Since 1973, the centre has specialised in solving materials handling problems from the conveying of powders and granular solid material in pipelines to storage issues in hoppers and silo design.  This work has included looking at why custard powder may, in certain circumstances, explode and household names such as Kelloggs, Tate and Lyle and Nestle have used Wolfson’s expertise.

 

Professor Bradley said: “Powders come in many forms and are part of our everyday lives. When we get up in the morning and sit down to breakfast nearly everything from teas and coffees through to cornflakes and wheat for bread come under our area of expertise. Putting on the light, taking our tablets, driving the car and even putting on our computer at work all depend on powders too.

 

“The aim of my talk is to show people just how big a role powders play in society and the problems that can occur in transporting and storing them. We want to highlight the breadth of work we do here in Medway and demonstrate our expertise which benefits large and small companies all over the UK and abroad, and the everyday users of their products.”
