Pupils from Bexleyheath School aged 12 and 13 took part in a Harry Potter Fun Day at the University of Greenwich’s Avery Hill campus on Wednesday, March 7. The event for around 80 pupils was organised by the University of Greenwich’s Access & Widening Participation Unit and was aimed at introducing schoolchildren to their local university.
University staff and students, some dressed in Harry Potter costumes, led a variety of Potter-themed activities and challenges to educate and entertain the 12 and13 year olds.
The pupils encountered Hedwig’s owl cousin who flew in from Eagle Heights, Kent’s Bird of Prey Centre at Eynsford. Other events included a Hat Making Challenge, Quidditch Trophy Challenge and workshops with a design, drama, science and sports theme. The pupils also produced a newsletter about the day.
Roger Telfer, a teacher at Bexleyheath School, says: “The University of Greenwich organisers deserve a huge thank you for giving our students such a wonderful day. I spoke to some of the students in the different workshops and they all felt that they had attended the best one.”
The day was completed with an awards ceremony, where the children received Challenge Certificates of Participation from members of staff and Harry Potter character, Professor McGonagall.
