Hundreds Attend University Carol Service

A1478-University-choir-carol-service-2007-1Hundreds attended the Academic Carol Service at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel this week (Tuesday 4 December). The University of Greenwich choir sang a range of enchanting Christmas songs and led the congregation in traditional carols.

University chaplain Rev. Jules Gomes gave a lively sermon on the earthy realism of the Christmas story with its smelly stable and lowly shepherds. “You couldn’t make this up”, he said.

The choir, led by the university’s Music Director, Nicholas Jenkins, started the service with a 14th century Latin verse about the Angel Gabriel’s meeting with Mary. Music from as far afield as the Basque Country, Mexico and North America was mixed with traditional English pieces.
