New students arriving at the Universities at Medway campus from next week can look forward to enjoying an extensive series of special offers.
Free travel on Arriva buses between Chatham, Gillingham and the campus, discounts at cafes, free entry to nightclubs and cut-price leisure pursuits such as go-karting and ice skating are just some of the deals that students can take advantage of, before the serious business of studying gets under way.
Rochester-based Baggins Book Bazaar, which has more than half a million second-hand books in stock, is also offering students discounts on its full range of titles, including fiction, biography, local history and academic texts.
Sophie Bruschan, Activities Co-ordinator for Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA), said the range of offers would help Medway’s new students settle into their new lives. ‘All our freshers will soon be learning how to manage on a budget and make their money go further, and so we hope our unique offers give them a great start,’ she said.
UMSA, which represents all the partner institutions at Medway – namely Kent, Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church universities, plus Mid-Kent College – has also planned an entire fortnight of events for freshers, who will be arriving at the campus at Chatham Maritime from Saturday (15 September).
Freshers’ activities range from live music, karaoke nights and pub quizzes to an indoor rowing competition. The highlight of the fortnight is a freshers’ ball on Saturday, 29 September.
Another key date for students’ diaries is the freshers’ fair on Wednesday, 26 September. ‘All our sports clubs and societies are going to have stands at the fair, so it’s the perfect way to see what opportunities there are for getting involved with university life,’ Ms Bruschan said.
‘This will be by far the biggest and best freshers’ fortnight that Medway has seen, which reflects the fast-growing nature of the campus. All of our events are aimed at helping students to make new friends, play their part in student life and have plenty to do when they put down their books.’
During freshers’ fortnight students will also receive goody bags including handbooks about campus life and local information packs.
