  • A1351-SLG Genc Mulliqi

New Exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery

A1351-SLG_Genc_Mulliqi

Communication in between... by Genc Mulliqi. Thursday, March 8 to Saturday, March 31, 2007.

Albanian artist Genc Mulliqi has a new exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich, in partnership with Greenwich Community College.

The exhibition, Communication in between…, explores themes of identity and belonging in sculpture and painting. The focus of the exhibition is Mulliqi’s series of ceramic heads, work he began during his time as artist in residence at Greenwich Community College in 2001. Genc describes the heads as “representing members of a nation which reside not just in another part of the world, but in some other dimension, mutely but powerfully communicating wisdom or anger, a stillness, intelligence or mystery”.

Genc’s work with Greenwich Community College involved encouraging local Albanian and Kosovan communities to use art as a way to express past suffering. For Mulliqi representing the uncertainty and transition felt in his native Albania is central to his work: “As I pass through borders from one country to another, queuing for visas in long rows with hundreds of others, I have always been an unsettled traveller. And in some ways my work seems to appear affected by this state of uncertainty, being in between borders, in the limbo of time.”

Genc Mulliqi has had successful exhibitions in Belgium, Holland, Germany and the UK as well as his native Albania. He has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Tirana, and Wimbledon School of Arts and he was recently appointed Director of the National Gallery in Tirana, Albania.

The exhibition will be held partly in the undercroft of Queen Anne Court in the historic Old Royal Naval College, now home to the University of Greenwich and the Stephen Lawrence Gallery. The Stephen Lawrence Gallery was established by the University of Greenwich in 2003 to showcase contemporary artists and promote cultural diversity in visual arts. The gallery is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, admission is free.
