  • A1439 -Pupils Scheme Glimpse of Their Future

Scheme Gives Pupils Glimpse Of Their Future

A1427-Professor-Stuart-AshendenThe University of Greenwich at Medway has been working with local A-level pupils to give them a glimpse of the future and an insight into higher education life as well as the courses available to study.

A series of pilot schemes for pupils in Year 13, entitled Explore, has been launched by the university aimed at showing students what is on offer after their A-levels or Diplomas and what will be expected of them should they continue their studies.

Pupils from Chatham Grammar School for Boys, Christ The King Sixth Form College, Lewisham and Sir Joseph Williamson’s Mathematical School in Rochester have been taking part in the project.

Initially pupils came to the university for a day to find out what’s on offer with one of three themes: Engineering, Computing and IT and Business and Entrepreneurship  - all subjects offered at the Medway Campus.

From there, the Year 13 students, who are in the final year of school, will undertake additional tuition and projects associated with their particular themes that will not only provide an insight into careers in their chosen subject but also enhance and extend their A-levels or Diplomas. These are designed to help with pupils’ schoolwork while also raising awareness of the application of their subject to a wide range of courses and careers.

Dr Stuart Ashenden, Director of Academic Planning, Medway, says: “This is a fantastic chance for pupils to discover what life will be like for them at university and what is expected of them. It is also a chance for them to get an insight into the topics available here at the University of Greenwich and how they apply later to a multitude of different career options.

“We hope this project will bridge the gap between school and university life and provide students with a good insight of what to expect if they progress to university.

“So far this has been a successful pilot scheme which has been eagerly taken up by the pupils and we are hoping we can roll it out to more schools and offer more subjects such as biosciences.”
