One hundred years of teaching at the Avery Hill campus of the University of Greenwich will be celebrated with a big band concert on Monday, March 19, 2007.
The University Big Band will present a multimedia concert, tracing the development of jazz, dance and big band music alongside the history of Avery Hill, with illustrations from the university archives.
The Avery Hill campus began life as a teacher training college, later becoming part of Thames Polytechnic and then the University of Greenwich. As well as trainee teachers, the campus is now home to students studying nursing, midwifery, social care, architecture and construction. Around 6,300 students now study on the campus, while the student village is home to over 1,000 students who live on site.
In 2006 two new buildings were opened on the campus, after a £14million investment. The concert will be performed in the David Fussey Building, named after the university’s previous vice-chancellor, who was an enthusiastic supporter of music in the university.
The University Big Band was formed in 1985 by staff of Thames Polytechnic, and is formed of past and present staff and students from the university, as well as local professional and amateur musicians.
Fred Parrett, saxophonist and manager of the band, says: “We’re very excited to be celebrating the centenary with what promises to be a great night of entertainment. The Big Band has been rehearsing at the Avery Hill campus for 21 years and has performed at a number of musical events in the university and for local charity organisations. These concerts are always oversubscribed; this is a special event – not to be missed.”
The Big Band concert will take place on Monday, March 19 at 7.45pm in the lecture theatre of the David Fussey building on the Southwood Site of the Avery Hill campus
