This year marks the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. To acknowledge this, the real story of slavery will be the topic of the next Pembroke Lecture, which takes place on Wednesday, October 24, at the University of Greenwich at Medway.
Marika Sherwood, author and vice-chair of the Black and Asian Studies Association, will give the talk, which looks at the effectiveness of the Abolition and Emancipation acts.
Professor Alan Reed, of the University of Greenwich at Medway, who organises the Pembroke Lecture series says: “Following the Abolition of Slavery Act, the British Government and Parliament were kept well-informed of ongoing illegal British participation in the nefarious trade of slavery in the British Empire.
“Despite numerous investigatory commissions and more Acts, nothing effective was done to stop this and this lecture will unravel the real story of what went on. The lecture is being organised in partnership with the Chatham Historic Dockyard.”
Tickets for the talk are free and anyone attending should arrive between 6:30 pm for 7:00pm in the Wardroom of the Pembroke Building at the University of Greenwich at Medway in Chatham Maritime.
