The University of Greenwich is launching a one year postgraduate diploma in journalism, starting this October. Students will be trained to industry standards in a state-of-the-art multimedia newsroom, with access to a PA feed, desk top publishing and editing facilities, creating the feel of a professional working environment. They will also use the university’s digital TV studio. Course content will include news writing, Teeline shorthand, public affairs, law, digital recording and writing for the internet.
The course is aimed at practising journalists and graduates hoping to enter the profession, and will prepare students for the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ Preliminary Certificate.
Tutors include Paul Eastham, former Deputy Political Editor of the Daily Mail and Kathy Watson, an experienced journalist and lecturer from Birkbeck, University of London.
The department head is Alev Adil, an arts reviewer for The Independent, who says: “Traditionally journalists learnt the skills of their trade ‘on the job’. These days, however, journalists are more likely to be graduates and to have taken an industry-recognised course in higher education as a stepping stone into the profession.
“This new diploma course is tough but rewarding. With over 30 hours of teaching a week, it will provide students with all the key skills that employers are looking for, leading to interesting career opportunities in journalism – especially print media, public relations, publishing, online journalism and writing.”
