A collaborative project hosted by the University of Greenwich at Medway has helped give young people who have been in care a taste of educational life.
The Care Leaver Summer School was a three-day non-residential programme for 25 people aged between 16 and 20 years-old, who took part in a range of workshops.
Subjects covered included midwifery, robotics, sports therapy and sports testing. After the course was completed a formal dinner was held to mark everyone’s achievements and certificates were distributed.
University of Greenwich at Medway Education Liaison Coordinator Will Calver said: “The event was a great success and was aimed at young people who have been in foster care or sheltered accommodation.
“The group which took part in the summer school have had their education affected by their backgrounds and may not have achieved all they want because of that. This event was meant to raise aspirations and show them what is available and what they can achieve through learning.”
The summer school was hosted by the University of Greenwich at Medway and was supported by Canterbury Christ Church University, the University of Kent, the Open University and the University College for the Creative Arts
