Two Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA) staff members have set themselves a steep challenge by attempting to climb the three highest mountains in Britain in just 24 hours.
Sophie Bruschan and Stephen O’Brien, are taking part in the Three Peaks Challenge on 7 July, in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign charity. UMSA is the representative body and service provider for students studying at the Universities at Medway campus include the universities of Greenwich, Kent, Canterbury Christ Church together with Mid Kent College.
The pair will be part of a group tackling walks on Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon throughout the morning, noon and night, with little rest except for the drives between the three mountains.
As UMSA’s activities co-ordinator, Sophie is more often to be found organising events for the campus’s 6,000 students, such as the recent Medway Boat Race.
She said she was both excited and daunted by the Three Peaks Challenge. ‘The sheer size of the task is quite scary, but I’m sure there will be a great feeling of satisfaction at the end,’ she said.
‘Breast cancer is a cause that is close to my heart. Both Stephen and myself have had a close family member who has been diagnosed with it, though thankfully they have both recovered. But the fundraising side is all important and I’m sure will really spur us on when the going gets tough.’
Both Sophie and Stephen – UMSA’s Entertainments Manager – have pledged to raise at least £650 each for the charity.
