The University of Greenwich at Medway has pledged support to some of Kent’s top athletes in a new partnership with Dartford Judo Club.
Dartford Judo Club offers top-class coaching to world class standards in a £4.5 million purpose built training centre, built by Dartford Borough Council, which is the only confirmed Olympic training venue in the UK. The club is used by the national squads and future top athletes, as well as hundreds of local young people.
The partnership will see the university offer its expertise in sports science to the club, opening up the facilities of the Centre of Sports and Exercise Science at the University’s Medway campus to the club’s high level and elite performers. Athletes from the club who choose to study at the university will benefit from innovative and flexible ways to study and train at the same time. A plaque marking the partnership was unveiled at a ceremony this week, attended by university representatives and club officials.
Professor Alan Reed, Director of Regional Development (Kent & Medway), for the university says: “the university is delighted to form a working relationship with Dartford Judo Club. The scheme will enable top judo players to combine studying for a degree with their commitment to training and tournaments. Access to expertise and facilities in sports and exercise science at our Medway campus will also enhance the potential to compete and win at the highest level”.
Alan Roberts, Dartford Judo Club Founder says “I am extremely excited about the link forged with the University of Greenwich. The assistance pledged by the university will be a major factor in our club’s ambitions to recruit, train and support top class judo athletes”.
“This partnership will help our judo players achieve success in their education, judo pathways and careers, thanks to the excellent facilities and expertise of the two organisations”.
