Greenwich Hospital is funding a new bursary scheme for students at the University of Greenwich.
The charity is to provide three annual bursaries of £3,000 for students in need of financial assistance. The bursaries are aimed at those whose parents are serving or former ratings of the Royal Navy or Royal Marines. The funding will support students studying courses in the university’s schools of Architecture & Construction, Computing & Mathematical Sciences, Engineering and Science.
Tessa Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, says: “Greenwich Hospital has a distinguished record of providing educational opportunities to people with naval and maritime connections and I am delighted with its generous decision to support students in this university.”
Martin Sands, the Director of Greenwich Hospital, says “I am very pleased to be able to provide these Greenwich Hospital bursaries for eligible students for maritime-related subjects, which will continue the tradition of education of the children of Royal Navy and Royal Marine seafarers at Greenwich which began with our Royal Charter in 1694. I expect this to be the start of a long and developing relationship with the University of Greenwich”.
Greenwich Hospital was established as the Royal Hospital for Seamen in 1694 on the River Thames in the centre of Greenwich. The site was subsequently occupied by the Royal Naval College from 1873 to 1998. The buildings now house the main campus of the University of Greenwich.
Today, Greenwich Hospital provides charitable support to a number of naval charities and organisations in the form of grants, pensions and educational bursaries, It also owns and operates three sheltered housing schemes, in Saltash, Portsmouth and at Trafalgar Quarters at Park Row in Greenwich. It derives its income for its charitable output from quoted investments, commercial and residential property, particularly in Greenwich where it owns a large part of the town centre including the Market.
