John Goto’s New World Circus. Friday, April 6 to Saturday, May 5 2007
John Goto’s new exhibition is the latest work to be displayed in the Stephen Lawrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich. New World Circus plays with drama, irony and illusion, using modern technology to manipulate images and create spectacular events. The exhibition uses the traditions of the circus to explore aspects of the modern world including consumerism and the war in Iraq.
Goto’s work explores “the disparaging analogy of politics and power to a circus”, using digital montages to create characters within his alternative circus.
The work is accompanied by a new soundscape by composer Michael Young, a lecturer at Goldsmiths College, University of London, created specifically for this exhibition and including sound bites from politicians and footage of world events.
New World Circus is a touring exhibition from Focal Point Gallery, Southend-on-Sea.
The Stephen Lawrence Gallery was established by the University of Greenwich to showcase contemporary artists and promote cultural diversity in visual arts. It is located in Queen Anne Court, University of Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, SE10. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
More information about the exhibition is available from John Goto's website
