Greenwich Alive!

16 - 27 June 2007
Art, Music and Architecture

Image courtesy Maritime Greenwich World Heritage SiteThe University of Greenwich is taking part in Greenwich Alive!, a multi-arts programme of events that celebrates the contemporary and classical mix of Greenwich. Launching in June this year the event has particular resonance as 2007 marks the 10th anniversary of Greenwich being awarded World Heritage Site status.

The combination of Greenwich’s great history, distinctive architecture and vibrant cultural offer is being celebrated in a series of events that include drama, dance, classical concerts, exhibitions, film screenings and family events. These events will take place between 16 and 27 June and will include attractions and venues throughout Maritime Greenwich.

2007 allows all partners within the World Heritage Site to mark 10 years of achievement, celebrating why Greenwich was awarded with this international status and how it has developed over 10 years to become a distinctive, cultural hub.

The full programme of events, trails and competitions is available at www.greenwichalive.com. A few of the highlights so far include a Handel with Hamper concert and Vivaldi’s Four Seasons at the Old Royal Naval College, family architecture days at the Queen’s House and a 21st century panel discussion at the new Planetarium, special film screenings at Greenwich Picturehouse, Open Gardens, Open Studios and plenty of jazz.

Greenwich Alive! includes events at the Old Royal Naval College, National Maritime Museum (Queen’s House, Planetarium), the University of Greenwich, Greenwich Park, LABAN, Greenwich Theatre, Blackheath Halls, Greenwich Picturehouse and Greenwich Market.

Notes to Editors:

Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site

Maritime Greenwich was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (WHS) by UNESCO in 1997. Greenwich is recognised for its cultural heritage:

  • the grandeur and sheer beauty of its buildings
  • the magnificent vistas and views across London
  • its royal history, as the birthplace of both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, among others.
  • Its naval and sea-faring history – the Old Royal Naval College was built originally as a hospital for veteran sailors and Admiral Lord Nelson lay in stage in its Painted Hall prior to his funeral. The National Maritime Museum and the Cutty Sark are also within the WHS boundaries
  • The University of Greenwich and Trinity College of Music are both based within the Site
  • Its scientific accomplishments – with Greenwich Mean Time and Longitude O˚, Greenwich
