Students at the University of Greenwich have been encouraging each other to volunteer for projects that will not only help other people and organisations but also give them a strong competitive edge in the jobs market when they graduate.
A series of events were staged at the university’s three campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway, to mark Student Volunteering Week. The events were designed to highlight the wide range of opportunities now open to students prepared to give a few hours of their time.
These included supporting national fundraising events, such as Comic Relief; assisting in a wide range of health service settings including hospitals, health centres and GP surgeries; and supporting conservation and environmental programmes such as Capstone Park, Gillingham, and Greenwich Peninsula Ecology Park.
Additionally, advisors were available to assist students maximise their volunteering experiences and acquire transferable skills to support their future job applications.
Eleanor Kehoe, Head of Employability at the University of Greenwich, said: “At any one time we have more than 100 students undertaking volunteer placements and involved in mentoring activities, which play a major role in supporting local services and also help our students acquire the skills they will need in the workplace.
“Volunteering gives students the opportunity to acquire a great deal of knowledge and understanding about their chosen field. This practical knowledge enhances their studies and means they are well placed to evaluate career options and apply for specific posts.”
