The University of Greenwich at Medway is to receive a triple boost in funding next year, as it has won record sums to increase student numbers, invest in research, and protect its science departments. The financial increases have been announced by the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
Over £3 million has been awarded to the University of Greenwich to increase student numbers from September – more than any other university in the country. Much of the cash is to be invested in the university’s Medway campus, at Chatham Maritime. There will be more places on offer at Medway in Civil Engineering, Urban Regeneration, Transport & Logistics and Business Studies. Also expanding is Medway School of Pharmacy, a joint project with the University of Kent.
The university’s research income is to rise by a massive 31%. Beneficiaries at Medway will include experts in science and engineering as well as the world-renowned Natural Resources Institute.
At a time when many universities are closing their science departments, the University of Greenwich at Medway has continued to invest in science and this commitment has been recognised with a special grant to help protect vulnerable and high cost subject such as these.
“This is fantastic news for the whole of the Kent and Medway area, as well as for the university,” says Stuart Ashenden, Director of Academic Planning at the University of Greenwich at Medway. “We will be able to train more graduates in the specialist skills that employers need. The increased investment in research and science will help us develop our services for business and industry, as well as the public sector, so that the economy of this region can grow.”
