HRH The Princess Royal Visits University of Greenwich for Student Workshop on Logistics and Transport
HRH The Princess Royal visited the University of Greenwich last week (Wednesday, February 14); to attend a student workshop on logistics, transport and supply chain management. Her Royal Highness is patron of The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (UK) – CILT(UK) - whose London Region organised the conference.
The Princess Royal congratulated the University of Greenwich and other higher education institutions in the capital for running courses about this important and growing area of the economy. “In this modern age we are used to the convenience of receiving goods where and when we want them, without stopping to think how they got there and so quickly,” she said. “Logistics and transport also have an important role to play in long-term sustainability, making things better for the future.”
Students, including two Masters students from the University of Greenwich, presented research findings to The Princess Royal, showing how supply chains could work more efficiently. Cormac O’Sullivan said that lives could be saved in humanitarian disasters if aid agencies work together more closely. International student Sergio Fajardo, who comes from Chile, spoke about the use of new technology to tag goods in the retail industry. The workshop attracted interest from around the world. Sarah Aigner, a student from the University of Applied Sciences in Steyr, Austria, presented a paper which was judged to be the best of the day. The University of Applied Sciences is a partner institution of the University of Greenwich.
The Princess Royal responded by saying: “What I see here today is work at all levels, an international perspective and research. It is greatly encouraging that so many of you are choosing to look at logistics and transport in depth, and doing research. This is a highly creative area, a growth area in terms of employment. It is an area that has been left out for long enough and I am impressed by your enthusiasm and interest.”
Event organiser Stephen Hickman from the University of Greenwich Business School says: “It was a huge boost for the students, and for the university, to have a visit from Her Royal Highness. She really impressed us with her depth of knowledge and understanding of the subject. It was a great honour to welcome her to the Greenwich campus.”
Steve Agg, Chief Executive of CILT(UK) said: “Her Royal Highness is a great ambassador for the logistics and transport industry and we are honoured to have her as our patron. The focus at the workshop on new technology and humanitarian logistics matches the Institute’s priorities in a world where the supply chain is becoming ever more important.”
