  • A1348 - Professor Li Inaugural Lecture

Inaugural Lecture Puts Civil Concerns at the Heart of Engineering

A1348-_PROFLIProfessor Chun-Qing Li, the first Atkins Chair of Civil Engineering at the University of Greenwich at Medway, will present his inaugural lecture on Thursday, March 8.

Professor Li will be officially welcomed by Baroness Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich.

His lecture, Dawn of a New Era, will focus on the latest developments at the centre of excellence in civil engineering at the University of Greenwich at Medway.

Professor Li is encouraging civil engineers to respond to increasing global pressure for more sustainable development of the built environment and to pay greater attention to community needs – locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

He will describe how greater ecological and environmental awareness, and the high costs of demolition and replacement, are increasing demands for civil engineers to invent new technologies to prolong the remaining safe service life of existing bridges and buildings.

And he will outline the theoretical framework required to ensure that safety and cost effectiveness become pivotal factors in the development and management of new building projects.

He said: “The global demand for sustainable development of civil infrastructure can be seen as a new phase of civilisation. We civil engineers have a duty to put the civil into civilisation”.

Professor Li is particularly well known for his research into risk and reliability analysis of civil works, the effects of steel corrosion on structural behaviour, whole life design and structural resistance deterioration.

He has published more than 120 academic papers and been awarded more than 15 academic grants from national research councils in both the UK and Australia.

In addition to being the first holder of the Atkins Chair of Civil Engineering at the University of Greenwich, Professor Li is also an Honorary Professor at Zhejiang University of Technology, China.

Professor Li’s inaugural lecture will be held in the Pilkington Lecture Theatre, University of Greenwich at Medway, on Thursday, March 8, at 5pm. There is no charge to attend but booking is essential. To attend, call Nicola Cox tel: 01634 883557 or e-mail: n.j.cox@gre.ac.uk
