A Decision to Love by Brian Hand
Saturday, January 27 to Tuesday, February 20, 2007
The exhibition, A Decision to Love by Brian Hand, focuses on the Suffragette Derby of 1913, in which Emily Davison fatally disrupted the race by attempting to pin a suffragette tricolour on the King’s racehorse at Tattenham Corner. This exhibition exploring the revolutionary implications of the international suffrage movement is the latest installation at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich.
A Decision to Love concentrates on the various perspectives surrounding Davison’s fatal political act, retracing her journey to Epsom through archive documents and recordings of the 2006 Derby. Elements of the installation include floating umbrellas referencing the movement’s role in Mary Poppins, and are staged against a backdrop of the suffragette colours of purple, green and white.
Brian Hand is an artist based in Ireland, he was a founding member of the Irish art group Blue Funk. Hand was a participant in a group show at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery in 2002 curated by Mairead McClean called The Persistence of Gothic. He is currently teaching fine art at the Institute of Technology Carlow, which is supporting A Decision to Love alongside the Irish Arts Council.
The Stephen Lawrence Gallery is located in Queen Anne Court at the University of Greenwich, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich.
The gallery is open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Admission is free.
