The work of two University of Greenwich students was praised by prominent architects at the first annual REID architecture student prize ceremony.
Paula Robertson and Elizabeth Jacobs were awarded the “Best in Show” prize for their entry, “Thinkers and Makers”, their final assignment for the Diploma in Architecture. The winning project featured designs for two libraries intended to form a “cultural hub” for Medway.
Elizabeth Jacobs says: “Paula and I were thrilled to be put forward for the prize. It gave us the opportunity to exhibit our work alongside students from other universities, and in a professional environment, which was very exciting.”
“We were so pleased to have won 'Best in Show', not only for ourselves but to help promote the vibrant diploma course at Greenwich. We are very grateful to REID architecture for this opportunity.”
The work was judged alongside entries from other leading architecture schools in the UK, including The Bartlett at University College London and The Mackintosh in Glasgow. Judge Paul Warner commented that: “Elizabeth and Paula's entry was the most rounded of the submissions. We were excited by their initial concepts, which were then followed through into a potentially successful built form.”
Elizabeth and Paula both completed the diploma part-time over three years at the University of Greenwich Avery Hill campus. Both students are now working in architectural practices, Elizabeth, from Colchester, is based in London, and Paula in her home town of Maldon.
Judges included REID’s Chairman Geoffrey Reid, Design Director Matthew Bedward and Research Director Paul Warner. Guest judges Alan Leibowitz, Chairman of Dorrington Properties and Richard Waite, Architectural Journal Senior Reporter, also deliberated over the four entries at the launch of the prize on July 13.
The student prize is set to become an annual event, offering invaluable experience and understanding of the link between the study and practice of architecture. REID Chairman Geoffrey Reid says: “We strongly believe that supporting students through the challenges of their college courses is essential in preventing a widening gap between education and practice.”
