Course Applicants Take a Measured Approach to Clearing

A1291---clearing-successA record number of would-be students are talking to specialist advisors on the University of Greenwich Clearing hotlines but they are not panicking or making hasty decisions,” according to Beverley Woodhams, head of central recruitment for the university.

“We have taken 30 per cent more calls than last year from school and college leavers who have received their A-level results and mature students wanting to enrol for a full or part time degree course this autumn.

“But there is no panic. In the past people tended to grasp frantically at the first place offer they received.

“Everyone now seems to understands that there are university places available and they are taking the most sensible approach – discussing all their options, shopping around and only making a decision when they are satisfied it is the right course and the right university for them,” she said.

The university Clearing hotlines handled more than 14,500 calls during the first week after the announcement of the A-level results and will be open until the start of the new academic year.

“We have increased the number of advisors taking calls this year and this has given everyone more time to talk through options with potential applicants,” said Steve Wallis, director of admissions for the university.

“It is early days but the extra time we are now able to spend talking to individual applicants appears to be leading to a significant increase in the numbers of people accepting course offers.”

Pamela Baffour-Djan was one of the many callers who range the Clearing hotlines on the morning she received her A-level results.

“It was really easy to get through. Staff were very helpful and I was delighted to be offered a place for a BA (Hons) Business Studies course which I have accepted,” she said.

More than a thousand people also took the opportunity to visit the three University of Greenwich campuses at Maritime Greenwich, Avery Hill, and Medway for the special Clearing Open Day on Saturday (August 19).

The University of Greenwich Clearing hotlines are open from 9am to 7pm weekdays and from 10am to 4pm at weekends. Opening hours for Bank Holiday Monday (August 28) will be 10am – 4pm. From Monday, September 4, weekday hotline hours will run from 9am to 5pm.

The University of Greenwich campus at Maritime Greenwich will be open to the public with opportunities to talk to course tutors and lecturers on Wednesday, September 13. The University of Greenwich at Medway campus at Chatham Maritime is holding on Open Day on Wednesday, September 20.
