Students from Northfleet School for Girls and Northfleet Technology College and their parents discovered what life is like at a modern university when they took part in a special taster day at the University of Greenwich at Medway.
Parents took part in psychology and microbiology workshops and learned about the many courses now available through distance learning.
Meanwhile, younger participants explored African drumming-robotics, learned about the skills involved in journalism and took the opportunity to design their own mortarboards.
The “Help Your Child Achieve” taster day was organised by Will Calver, Access & Education Liaison Co-ordinator for the University of Greenwich Leap team, which is dedicated to widening participation in Higher Education.
“We are encouraging young people to think about their own skills and the careers they may be interested in when they leave school. And we are raising awareness of what a modern university is like and the range of courses and training opportunities now available,” he said.
Every year the University of Greenwich works with more than 1,500 school children across Kent & Medway from primary school through to university entry. The programme of special events is prepared by the university’s widening participation team, in collaboration with Aimhigher Kent & Medway, and funded by the Higher Education Council for England (HEFCE), local authorities and the Learning & Skills Council.
The University of Greenwich has campuses at Greenwich, Avery Hill and Medway. For further information call 0800 005 006 or visit www.greenwich.ac.uk
