New Exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery

An image from On Thin Ice

On Thin Ice
December 19, 2006 to January 20, 2007

The Stephen Lawrence Gallery is beginning its programme of exhibitions for 2007 with On Thin Ice, an exhibition of new photographic work by Rik Pinkcombe, which uses the frozen landscape as a metaphor through which to examine cultural identity and division. The exhibition will run until January 20, 2007.

Shot along the Canada/USA border at Niagara Falls, the images explore the cultural divisions signified in the fissures of the ice. Pinkcombe considers the experience of migration and the idea of the border as a force for both division and connection.

The work uses image distortion and manipulation to create misleading perceptions of perspective and scale, Pinkcombe draws on this sense of the artificial to reflect on the separation these borders impose.
