Universities at Medway has been praised by Ruth Kelly MP, Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government. In a speech to the Thames Gateway Forum, the annual meeting place for all those involved in the regeneration of The Thames Gateway and Olympic region, she reported that there had been great progress, saying:
"Let us take pride in what we have already achieved [including] the new universities at Medway campus [which] is proving hugely popular...our plans will help make the Thames Gateway a new centre of learning."
The universities of Canterbury Christ Church, Greenwich and Kent have collaborated to create a shared campus on the site of the former HMS Pembroke at Chatham Maritime which is bringing new jobs to the area and training graduates in the skills that the region's employers need for the future.
Professor Alan Reed, speaking on behalf of Universities at Medway, said: "We are delighted to win this recognition from the Cabinet Minister who is responsible for regeneration. It is a real boost to everyone who has been involved in developing this initiative - not just university staff and students, but Medway Council, SEEDA, local employers, residents and everyone else who has shared our vision to create a thriving university town here."
Universities at Medway is supported by Medway Council, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and the Kent and Medway Strategic Health Authority.
