A new exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, University of Greenwich. November 15 to December 6, 2006.
A new exhibition at the Stephen awrence Gallery at the University of Greenwich will explore the influence of memory on visual culture through a group exhibition in a variety of media. The exhibition, entitled TRACE, presents work reflecting the stages of memory, between record and recall, exploring the quirks and fallibility of the process.
TRACE incorporates prints, photographs, clay work, drawings, film and performance, from artists including Ólöf Bjórnsdöttir, Brighid Lowe, Maryclare Foa and Paul Coldwell.
The rarely seen Jacobean undercroft, beneath the gallery, will host a video installation by Babara Rauch and Georg Mühleck, exploring memory, recognition and identity. A programme of films in the lecture theatre adjacent to the gallery will chart relationships between memory and the recounting of events.
A performance by Mark Wayman will make connections between the present and past by linking the naval history of the Old Royal Naval College with its present day function as a university. Maryclare Foa’s film revisits a journey she once made from the Arctic to the Greenwich site.
TRACE is curated by David Waterworth and presented in association with the department of Critical, Cultural and Communication studies in the School of Humanities at the University of Greenwich.
