Sports scientists from the University of Greenwich at Medway have been putting students at New Brompton College, Gillingham, through their paces as an introduction to what it is like studying sport at university.
Bettina Karsten, Senior Lecturer in Sports Science, at the University of Greenwich, led the Gillingham students through an activity workshop supporting their BTEC Sport course curriculum.
The workshop, which included anaerobic, agility and flexibility testing, was also designed as part of the national STEM programme, which aims to increase participation and progression in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
The university taster workshop was organised by Will Calver, Access & Education Liaison Coordinator, of LEAP – the university’s organisation dedicated to widening participation in Higher Education.
Mr Calver said: “We are encouraging young people to think about their own skills and the careers they may be interested in when they leave school. And we are raising awareness of the range of courses and training opportunities available.”
Every year the University of Greenwich works with more than 1,500 school children in Kent & Medway from primary school through to university entry.
The university’s widening participation team works in collaboration with Aimhigher Kent and Medway with funding from the Higher Education Council for England (HEFCE), local authorities and the Learning & Skills Council.
